Dr. Harisingh Gour University was formed in the year 1946 on the 18th of July and it was earlier called as University of Saugar. It is the oldest university in the state of Madhya Pradesh and the 18th Univesity in the whole of India. The university was formed from the hard-earned savings of a single person Dr. Harisingh Gour, who was a social reformer, educationist, Philonthropist and great patriot.

The State Legislature of Madhya Pradesh called this university by the present name on 1983 in the month of February. The university’s campus is located at about 5km east of the city of Sagar on the peak of Patharia hills at an area of 830.3 hectares.  The district wise list of colleges affiliated to the university is given below:

Dr. Harisingh Gour University has more than 35 teaching departments and this number is increasing every year, ten faculties and 90 affiliated colleges and its jurisdiction is spread over 6 districts in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The campus of the university has a total of 6 hostels of which 2 are meant for girls and 4 for boys and other facilities like shopping complex, STD booth, three canteens, post office, University press, hospital and even a bank.

The campus also includes a central library called by the name of Jawaharlal Nehru, apart from the 26 departmental libraries. In addition to the traditional courses, the university is also offering special courses under subjects like Biotechnology, microbiology, adult education, mass communication, performing arts, anthropology, forensic and criminology science and these subjects are attracting many students towards the university.
