Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University was formed by Government of Delhi in the year 1998 under Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Act, which was later amended in the year 1999. Under Sec 12B of University Grants Commission Act, the university was awarded recognition and it also received ‘A Grade’ accreditation during March 2007 from NAAC and it was also awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification.

The campus of the university is extended over an area of 16 acres at Kashmere Gate, Delhi and it has taken into possession two lands measuring 60 acres and 19 acres in West Delhi and East Delhi respectively. The land in West Delhi is proposed for the purpose of setting up a state-of-art campus with ultra-modern facilities. The main aim of the university is to stimulate the minds and hearts of scholars and encourage them to denote to the welfare of the society and to provide them training so as to adapt themselves to the ever modifying needs of the society and to teach them for taking up cultural leadership in order to make sure that prosperity, harmony and peace exist in the society as a whole. The university admits students to different degree courses by conducting Common Entrance Test.
