With the purpose of meeting the educational and cultural requirements of the people of north Gujarat, Hemchandracharya University was formed by a government order dated 17th of May 1986 and this was later transformed into North Gujarat University Act of 1986. The university has been expanding and growing steadily right from its formation. The jurisdiction of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University covers four districts of the state of Gujarat, namely Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Patan and Mehsana. The university was bifurcated from Gujarat University located in the city of Ahmedabad. During the separation the north Gujarat University was not awarded with any assets from its parent university. Initially, the university had only 14 affiliated colleges under its jurisdiction, but now the number of colleges affiliated to the university has gone beyond 250 and the names of the colleges are given below:

Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University is offering education through 15 educational departments functioning in its campus and the university is awarded with B grade status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The university is offering education under nine different faculties of education namely management studies, pharmacy, rural studies, medicine, home science, commerce, law, engineering & technology inclusive of environmental planning, science, education and arts. A library is operating in the campus of the university with a collection of more than 55000 books, 775 video/audio cassettes, 1893 thesis & dissertation and more than 120 periodicals are currently subscribed by the library. In addition to the several other facilities, the university is also operating center for ceed, computer center and center for Indian diaspora in its campus.
