Andhra Pradesh Government formed the first University of Health sciences named as Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences in the year 1986 on the 9th of April by an Act of the state legislature of Andhra Pradesh. The university was launched by Mr. N.T. Rama Rao, and the university started functioning from the 1st of November 1986 at Vijayawada. After the death of this eminent leader, the university was named as NTR University of Health Sciences to honor him and it started functioning with the new name from the 2nd of February 1998.

The degree awarded by NTR University is approved by the statutory bodies like Indian Nursing Council, Central Council of Homoeopathy, the Central Council of Indian Medicine, the Dental Council of India and Medical Council of India. The university is conducting interactive program on research methodology, which lays attention to medical research with the aim of effective guidance of research scholars in the preparation of project proposals, observing the research projecting and guiding them in successful completion of the projects.

The university has signed Memorandum of Understanding with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine situated at Springfield in the country of the United States Of America and in continuation to the MOU three of the staff members of the university have been awarded placement in that foreign university for offering them training in medical education technology.
