Punjab Technical University was formed in the year 1997 on the 16th of January by an Act of Punjab Legislature for the purpose of promoting pharmaceutical, management and technical education in the state of Punjab not only at degree level, but at higher levels of education as well. It has become compulsory for the university to form centres of excellence in developing technologies and to promote development, research and training in the areas of management, pharmaceutical and technical education.

The main aim of the university is to produce skilled manpower to these sectors for the national as a whole and also for the state of Punjab. With this purpose in mind, the university has set up different courses not only in regular stream of education, but also in distance education. The mission of Punjab Techical Univesity is to provide quality education to the students and to make the affiliated colleges and learning centers as centers of excellence. In order to meet the needs of current emerging field, the university is following a new syllabus pattern from the year 2003.

For providing opportunities to the faculties to involve themselves in research activities and to improve their qualification, the university has formed nine regional centers at different locations in the state of Punjab and M. Tech courses and it has also agreed to offer research input to these centers. Apart from providing education, the university is also helping the students in getting job placement by acting as a bridge between the students and the employers.
