West Bengal University of Technology was formally established on the 15th of January 2001 under the West Bengal Act passed by the state legislature. After receiving a notification from the West Bengal Government on the 15th of June 2001, the university began its operations from the 16th of July 2001.

The university is a recipient of grants from the University Grants Commission and the two main objectives of the university is to offer framework of industrialization on the basis of knowledge economy and to serve as a centre of excellence in research and teaching in areas like management and technology. The university is functioning in Kolkata in a campus with an area of 45,000 square feet and it has also got another campus at Salt Lake with an area of 20,000 square feet. The vision of West Bengal University of Technology is to put the under-graduation courses in order particularly in the emerging areas of technology and engineering and post graduation programmes in management, technology, engineering and sciences with a view to produce managers, technologists, scientists of high caliber and to produce capable candidates, who can contribute to the development of industries.

The university also intends to disseminate and create knowledge so as to convert India into a knowledgeable country. As mentioned earlier, the university aims at emerging as a center of excellence and with this aim in mind three schools of studies namely school of management and sciences, school of biological and biotechnology sciences and school of engineering and technology were formed by the university.
