Rabindra Bharati University came into existence in the year 1962 on the 8th of May and the university is located in the metropolitan city of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal. The university was established through the Rabindra Bharati Act 1961 of the Government of West Bengal as a symbol to mark the occasion of the Birth Centenary of the popular poet Rabindranath Tagore. The university is located in the Tagore family home at Jorasanko Thakur Bari. In the year 2001, the university earned accreditation and four-star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and the main focus of the university is offer education in the fields of visual and performing arts.
Rabindra Bharati University offers courses in the faculties of arts, fine arts, visual arts, language & Culture. As mentioned earlier, the university’s focus is to offer education in the faculties of performing and visual arts, however, it also offers courses in other subjects like mathematics, videography, mass communication, library & information science, education, political science, history and economics. The best faculties of the university have ensured training up to PG level thereby offering scope for Research and M. Phil in different branches of knowledge. The directrate of distance education of Rabindra Bharati University began its journey in the academic year 2002-2003 after getting approval from the Higher Education Department of Government of West Bengal and the courses offered through distance education are duly approved by the Higher Education Department of the West Bengal Government. The university has opened twenty-three study centers in different corners of the state to offer courses through distance education. Rabindra Bharati University has won several awards for its excellence in education and the university is acting as one of the best universities in the state of West Bengal right from its inception.
