Thapar University was previously the Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology and the institute came into existence in the year 1956 and it was converted as a university in the year 1985 vide Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The university offers PG and UG Courses in social sciences, management, science and engineering and it strives for maintenance of an atmosphere that encourages scholarly research and inquiry and a spirit of deep commitment to educational excellence and creative independence. The university is located in a 250 acre campus known as The Thapar Technology Campus along with two other organizations in the historic city of Patiala. The institute was initially established through an imaginative collaboration between the then Patiala State, East Punjab state Union, the Patiala Technical Education Trust and the Central Government.
