The English Paper 2 of the Tamil Nadu Matriculation Exam is a 100 mark paper with the total time limit of two and half hours.  It is a lengthy paper therefore it is important to manage time properly. Just like paper 1, this paper is also divided into parts. The first part or Part A comprises of a logical sequence arrangement, reading comprehension and essay writing of 200 words. Part B deals with précis writing, studying the graph, paraphrasing, letter writing, dialogue writing, essay writing based on quote or phrase. There are a total number of eleven questions with internal choices among them.

There are two types of reading comprehension – prose based and poetry based. There are three types of letter asked – formal, informal, complaint from which the student is expected to attempt only one. The questions based on the graph and precise writing may or may not be directly related to the portion.

The main objective of the exam is to test the reading and comprehension skills, analytical and verbal skills etc. The question about creating an advertisement is aimed at testing the creative ability of the student.
