With many people facing a fast paced life, the requirement for proper food advice is on the increase. This is where nutritionists come in. Nutritionists help promote healthy eating habits. They help people plan their meals according to their life style. Nutritionists are in great demand in hospitals, nursing homes, health clubs, catering departments, research labs, etc. They can also open their own clinics.

There are many courses that a person aspiring to become a nutritionist can choose from. Those who think about this career after the 12th can opt for a degree course in Home Science, Nutrition or Food Technology. Candidates who have studied physics, chemistry and biology in their 12th std are eligible for these courses. Some institutes specify on a minimum percentage mark too. There are also some colleges that conduct entrance exams for these courses.

B Sc Home Science

There are lots of colleges all across the country that offers degree courses in home science. The course covers a lot of areas like food science, child development, garment construction and designing, etc.

B Sc Nutrition and dietetics/food and nutrition

Some of the colleges that offer a degree course in Nutrition and Dietetics are Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai, Institute of Science and Advanced Research Kolkata, Manav Rachna Internation University Haryana, Calicut University Kerala, etc. Food and Nutrition course is offered at Kakatiya University Warangal, BAMU Aurangabad, University of Delhi, etc. These courses concentrate more on nutrition. There is also a course called B Sc Food Preservation offered by Madras University and Calcutta University. There are papers on food science, cookery, meal management, dietetics, community nutrition, food service management, etc.

Post graduate Courses

There are post graduate courses like M Sc Food Science, M Sc Food and Nutrition, M Sc Home Science, M Sc Nutrition and Dietetics, M Sc Applied Nutrition, etc offered by some colleges in the country. Those interested in a career as a nutritionist could select one of these courses according to interest.

Applying for Nutritionist jobs

There are various job opportunities such as dietician, nutritionist. If interested the candidate could take a job of animal nutritionist. There is requirement in hospitals, health clubs. Nowadays nutritionists are required in top class hotels too. Also, they could work independently.
