UPSC Mains Geography (Paper I) Papers

In UPSC mains examination there are 9 papers in total. Each paper is of 3 hours duration and apart from language papers all other papers is set in two languages Hindi and English. All questions are essay type. Paper I is any Indian language, Paper II is English, Paper III is Essay, Paper IV & V are General Studies and Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX are optional subjects (two subjects and two papers each). These 4 subjects are to be chosen by candidates themselves.

Of these 4 papers one is Geography. The Geography paper is divided into two papers, Paper I and Paper II. Paper one consists of two sections, Section A and Section B, with 4 questions in each section. Candidates are required to answer 5 questions each of 60 marks. Question number 1 and 5 are compulsory and rest 3 questions are to be selected from rest of the questions with at least one question both from Section A and Section B.

In question 1 candidate is required to locate 10 places on an outline map of the world. Each locations carries 6 marks of which 1 mark is given for every correct entry and 5 marks for writing about strategic or geographical relevance of the locations in not more than 40 words. In question 5 candidates are required to write short notes in not more than 200 words on any of the three topics provided. This pattern was followed till 2008, but from 2009 pattern changed.
