The Indian institute of space science and technology is declared as a university under the act of UGC in the year 1956. The institute started in the year 2007 from the Vikram Sarabhai Space centre (VSRC).

IIST offers undergraduate B Tech programme, post graduate and doctoral and post graduation programmes to fulfill the needs of ISRO. The institute serves as the excellent environment for the development of excellent academics. IIST provides engineering in Avionics, Aerospace Engineering and Physical Sciences.

The following are the courses offered at IIST

A. 4 years Degree in Bachelor of Technology

a. (Avionics Engg.)        65 seats

b. (Aerospace Engg.)     52 seats

c. (Physical Sciences)    39 seats

B. 2 Years Master level Programmes

a. Tech (Applied and Adaptive Optics)

b. M. Tech (Chemical Systems)

c. M. Tech RF and Microwave Communications

d. M. Tech in Soft computing and Machine Learning.

C. Apart from these it also offers research programmes i.e. PhD.

The exam ISAT decides the admission to the B. Tech programmes or the undergraduate programmes. To apply the criteria is that the candidate must have at least 70% marks in 12th and 10th standards. The Criteria gives Relaxation to SC, ST candidates. The application Fee is Rs 500/- for male candidates in GEN and OBC categories whereas for females and SC, ST candidates the application fee is Rs 250/-. The Reservation of Seats is as per Government of India rules.

The academic area of the campus has well built lecture halls, Computing facilities, Seminar halls and counseling halls. An Information center that is totally computerized serves for the institute. The hostel provides rooms for both boys and girls separately with comfortable equipments. Each room has space for two students.  The computer labs has Internet labs and programming labs with a capacity of 60 students. Various Departments in IIST include the Department of earth and space science, Department of Physics, Department of Mathematics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Avionics, Department of aero space engineering.

    I have finished B.E ( Electronics & communications ) with 77.1% and M.E ( AERO-SPACE) from MIT ,Chennai with 87%
    Now I am seeking admission to do my P.hD in
    Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. I have received M.E my provisional certificate recently. In the month of June 2011, I was not allowed to write my P.hD enternace for having my provisional .
    Please let me know when is the next enterance exam for P.hD? Is it in December 2011or January 2012.
