Heavy Water Board was established under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. The major objective behind the establishment of the board was to have a responsible body for the production of Heavy Water. The heavy Water is used as a moderator and collant in the nuclear power as well as the research reacters. The board was initially introduced by the Chemical Engineering division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
