Ultra Sound technician also called as a diagnostic sonographer and such type of people are needed at most of the Multi-specialty hospitals. The boom in medical service has started creating a high demand for the Ultra Sound Technician and the job is recognized to carry a very attractive remuneration. An Ultra Sound Technician performs ultrasounds in medical setting which creates images used for diagnostics. After the successful completion of the course one can have opportunity in working with Hospitals, Medical Laboratories, Home Care providers etc.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
The minimum eligibility to become Ultra Sound technician is Plus-two with PCB from a recognized school/board. Some universities have minimum mark criteria for the admission process. The students having good knowledge in the medical terminology are given preference during the admission process.

- 4 year program from the recognized university- After plus two the students can apply for the colleges offering the bachelor degree in sonography and medical imaging. This course will help the aspirant to do specialization in different areas of imaging.
- Vocational or Community Colleges: They Offer 1-2 year courses for the aspirants
- Hospitals: Many hospitals run the recognized program in Ultra Sound technique for the applicants. The hospitals offer a conducive atmosphere for the students for learning.
- Universities/institutes have their own criteria for the admission process, like some conduct entrance test and some go with personal interview to identify the potential candidate.. Students are advised to stay away from the six to eight months program because there are many unrecognised institutes in India offering such courses.
Skills and Responsibilities
The students should have deep knowledge in the medical aspects and should be interested in pursuing the degree. The students having awareness in maths and computer science have proved to have an advantage while studying. Also the applicants are expected to have good command over English and knowledge about life science. During the course one should learn how to use various scanning equipments and medical diagnostic tools. They will also learn to read the ultrasound images and how to perform the scanning safely. One can also get the clinical experience during the course, because experience leads expertise in this field. After completing the course one should take the certification exam so as to register for The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Since the sound waves have proved to be a good method for diagnosing diseases this field offers brighter career movements.
