North Orissa University was established by the Government of Orissa under section 32 of the Orissa University Act 1989 through a government notification dated 13/07/1998. The university was established with the objective of offering higher education to the people belonging to the tribal base area of the northern parts of the state of Orissa.
The university is offering courses through different department like zoology, wildlife, anthropology, RS & GIS, physics, mathematics & computing, library & information sciences, law, economics, computer science and application, chemistry, business administration, botany, biochemistry and bioinformatics. North Orissa University is offering distance education courses through off-campus-distance learning mode, where in students are offered coaching through study centers. The main aim of North Orissa University is to offer quality education at UG, PG and at M. Phil levels and to engage in research activities in different fields.
The university has its jurisdiction spread over two districts of the state of Orissa being Keonjihar and Mayurbhanj. The university is offering education through its own departments and through nearly 80 affiliated colleges, which belongs to both general and to professional category.
