Paper description:

The conventional paper of mechanical engineering deals with the study of machines and its functioning. The subject mechanical engineering deals with anything that is a machine. The subject deals with the working principle and efficiency and application of the machines in our practical world. Problems regarding various mechanical motions and forces is also studied and solved under this trade of engineering.

Although, it has been very rare that questions have been repeated in an IAS examination, however, there are few topics that are important from the examination perspective. This includes topics like pulley system, strain stress, mass balance, force balance, equilibrium, various kinds of joints, and its application etc.

Paper pattern:

The UPSC, Engineering Services Exam, Mechanical Engineering Paper II (Conventional Papers) Paper is divided into three section. Section A of the paper is the compulsory section. This section has only 1 question, question number 1. This question number 1 is divided into 20 short type questions of 2 marks each. All are compulsory to be answered. Section B of the paper has 3 questions. Every question is divided into 3 or 4 sub questions and in total is of 40 marks. Candidates are asked to answer any 2 questions from section B. The section C of the paper has 3 questions of 40 marks. Candidates are again asked to answer any 2 questions.

Maximum marks:

The total mark of the paper is 200 and the time in which the answer is to be written is 3 hours.
