The country of India has a well-developed tax structure with a three-tier federal structure, which comprises of the urban/rural local bodies, state governments and the union government. These three tiers hold the distributed power of levying taxes in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of India.

The union government is entrusted with the power of levying taxes like service tax, sales tax, central excise, custom duties and income tax except tax from agricultural income, which is taken by the appropriate state governments). The state governments are entrusted with the power to levy taxes like tax on professions & callings, duty on entertainment tax, land revenue, state excise, stamp duty and sales tax, which includes tax on intra-state sale of goods. On the other hand, the local governments are entrusted with the power to levy user charges/taxes on utilities like drainage, water supply, etc…, Octroi, property tax like tax on buildings. In addition to levying taxes, the taxation sector also offers employment opportunities both in government and in private sector organizations.
