Jaintia Hills is an administrative district in the Indian state of Maghalaya and the district was established in the year 1972. The district is spread over an area of 3819 km2 and it has a population of nearly 3,00,000 people and most of them are rural majority people. The headquarters of the district is the city of Jowai and the district is a part of the subtropical forests eco region of the state of Meghalaya.

The district has mining and agriculture as its prominent economic activities and it holds the pride of being the largest producer of coal in the state of Meghalaya, which is made possible due to the large reserves of coal held by the district. When it comes to education in education in the district of Jaintia Hills, even though the district is not an educational hub, good colleges and schools are functioning from the Khliehriat and Jowai regions of the district. Arts, Science & Commerce College:

Kiang Nangbah Government College is one among the three government colleges for arts, science and commerce functioning in the state of Meghalaya. The college offers both intermediate and degree courses and the present teacher strength of the college is 76 teachers, while for class XI there are 108 boys and 78 girls, class XII 76 boys & 81 girls and for degree courses there are 81 girls thereby making a student strength of 341. This record is according to the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education of the state of Meghalaya. The college began its journey as a night college in the year 1967 and now it is functioning as a full-time educational institution offering education with affiliation from the North Easter Hill University.

Polytechnic College:

Jowai Polytechnic, Jowai came into existence in the year 2002 and the college was established by the Government of Meghalaya with financial assistance provided by the World Bank under the Third Technician Education III Project. The college offers diploma courses for students who have completed their High School Leaving Programme (Class X). the college is located at a place called Ladthalaboh, which is close to the Kiang Nongbah Government College at a distance of about 65 kms from the state capital Shillong. The college offers three-year diploma courses in the following subjects:

Costume Design & Garment Technology

Automobile Engineering

Architectural Assistantship

All these courses are divided into six groups namely foundation course, hard core course, soft core course, basic technology course, applied technology course and elective course. For seeking admission to these diploma courses, candidates must have completed their Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education of Meghalaya or any other recognized board or council in India by securing not less than 45% of marks in mathematics and science subjects. In the case of SC/ST candidates, they must have secured at least 40% of marks in science and mathematics subject of Class X examination. Candidates will be selected based on appropriate selection or screening process as prescribed by the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education of the state of Meghalaya. Final selection of candidates will be made by the State Government of Meghalaya.

Thus, these college are offering the best education in Jaintia Hills District of the state and there are also some popular private colleges in this district.
