Tuensang is the largest urban centre in the state of Nagaland along with other cities like Mokokchung, Kohima and Dimapur. The permanent tribes or land owners of the district are Khaimniugans, Yimchungers, Sangtams and Changs. This town acts as a nerve center of the Eastern part of the state comprising  of four districts names Longleng, Kiphire, Mon and Tuensang with six major tribes.

Since the town acts as the headquarters for many apex bodies like Eastern Farming Association, Eleutheros Christian Students’ Union, Confederation of Chang Student’s Union, Chang Khulei Setshang, Eastern Naga Students’ Federation and Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization, the town has great importance among the people of Nagaland.

Education in Tuensang:

Like other aspects, the city has earned name among people of the state of Nagaland with respect to educational aspect as well. This is because, there are about 24 schools in the city, which includes both government and private higher secondary, primary and high schools and about five colleges, which includes both government and private colleges. Of these five colleges, there is only a single government colleges functioning under the control of the Government of Nagaland and the name and some of the details about this college are given below:

Sao Chang College

Sao Chang College:

Sao Chang College was previously called as Tuensang College and the college came into existence with its name as Night College in the year 1973 to enable office-goers to get higher education. According to a resolution passed in the year 1974 the name of the college was changed as Tuensang College. Over these several years of its existence the college has played a crucial role in the field of educational development and social change. Later in the year 1983, the college was taken over by the Government of Nagaland and thereby the name of the college was changed as Sao Chang College. The college offers science stream courses at the UG level and arts and commerce courses not only at the higher secondary level, but also at the UG level. In addition to general courses, the college also offers science courses in subjects like History, Political Science and English. The college presently has more than 35 lecturers, nearly 28 ministerial staff and nearly 570 students.

Thus, the city of Tuensang in the Indian state of Nagaland is acting as one of the few towns in the state of Nagaland with good educational institutions for offering education at the school and collegiate level. The average literacy rate of the city is 71%, which is higher than the national average.
