Subarnapur District is also called as Sonepur District and the district acts as an administrative district in the state of Orissa. The district is located in the eastern part of the country and the town of Sonepur is the headquarters of the district and the people of the district are called as Sonepuria. Even though, the former name of the district was Sonepur, its name was changed after Somavasi rules as Subarnapur District.

Subarnapur District is bounded by the districts of Baudh, Balangir, Angul, Sambalpur and Bargarh Districts of the state of Orissa. In the year 2006, the district was identified by the Ministry of Panchayat Raj as 250th most backward districts in India out of 640 most backward districts in the nation. The district receives funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme along with 19 other districts in the state of Orissa.

This district is popularly known as second Varanasi of the nation and it is also known as the heaven on the earth because of its abundance of natural resources and natural beauty. The district is popular for its spinning mills and the river Mahanadi passes through the district. According to a survey conducted in the year 1881, it was the most prosperous region in the nation. The district is also popularly called as city of temples.
