Aspirants seeking to pursue a Ph.D in Marine Biotechnology can opt for a full time or a part time course. They can research in a relevant area as part of doing this Ph.D program. It can involve interdisciplinary, application and developmental work. Andhra University and Goa University are two major universities offering Ph.D in Marine Biotechnology.

Eligibility

Graduates in any Life Science disciplines with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible to apply for Ph.D in Marine Biotechnology. Some of the major disciplines under Life Science are as following:

• Biochemistry
• Bioinformatics
• Biology
• Biotechnology
• Botany
• Genetics
• Genomics
• Marine biology
• Microbiology
• Zoology

Candidates who have qualified NET/ SET/JRF examination conducted by bodies such as CSIR/ ICAR/ DBT /UGC/ICMR etc will be given preference.

M. Phil degree holders or Teacher fellow holders will also get preference.

Admission Procedure

Admission to Ph.D in Marine Biotechnology is through the entrance examination conducted by the concerned colleges/departments/universities. Application forms can be downloaded from the concerned university website. Duly filled in application forms should reach the concerned department within the specified time. The entrance examination is usually conducted in the month of July and August.

The entrance examination usually consists of two papers. Paper 1 tests a student’s research aptitude and Paper II tests the student’s subject knowledge. The following is the entrance examination pattern followed by Goa University for admission to the Ph. D in Marine Biotechnology.

Paper I is a 2 hour paper carrying a total of 100 marks. It consists of objective type questions from the following areas:

• Language competency
• Numerical ability
• Logical reasoning

Paper II is subject - specific. Candidates are required to complete the paper within two hours time. It carries a total of 100 marks. The paper contains both objective and descriptive questions. The questions will be based on the syllabus followed in the Master of Science in Marine Biotechnology/Marine Biology course.

Candidates with SET/NET/JRF qualification are considered for admission to the Ph. D programme without writing the entrance examination in some colleges.

The written examination is followed by a personal interview. Candidates are required to have a clear idea regarding their area of interest when appearing for the interview.

Candidates can choose to purse the research as a part timer or as a full time scholar. The part time scholars are required to submit the thesis within 4 years. The full time research scholars get 3 years to complete the thesis. In both the schemes candidates are required to undergo one semester course work. Candidates who have an M. Phil degree are exempted from the course work.
