HSC passed candidates with a minimum of 55% marks can apply for the position of sailor in Indian Navy. Candidates below 19 years can participate in the selection process. Selection of eligible candidates is done through written test, physical fitness test and medical fitness examination. Applications can be submitted only through online method via the web portal of Indian Navy.

Eligibility Criterion for Sailors in Indian Navy

Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply. They should be of Indian origin or subjects of Nepal or Bhutan. They must have completed their 10 + 2 studies from any of the reputed board with a minimum of 55% marks and with Mathematics and Physics as compulsory subjects. They should have also studied any of the subjects Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science as optional subjects. Age of the candidate must fall anywhere between 16 and 19 years. More clearly, candidates born between 1st August 1993 and 31st July 1996 are only eligible.

Selection Procedure for Sailors in Indian Navy

Selection of suitable candidates is done on order of merit obtained by candidate’s performance in the following stages.

  • Written Test
  • Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
  • Medical Fitness Examination

Written exam is conducted for duration of one hour. It is conducted as an objective model test covering questions on English, mathematics, science and general knowledge. Candidate need to get a pass in each of the sections to clear the session.

Those who qualify written exam are permitted to move to the next stage of selection, physical fitness test (PFT). This includes 1.6 Km run, 10 Push-ups and 25 squat ups.

A group of authorized military officers conducts the medical fitness examination. They check whether the physical standards of the candidate are up to the prescribed standard regulations. Usually candidates are checked for the following attributes.

  • Minimum height — 157 cms
  • Minimum Chest expansion — 5 cms
  • Good mental and physical health
  • Must be free of any cardio-vascular disease or surgical deformities

Applications can be submitted through online method only. After submitting applications candidate needs to take two print copies of the submitted application. One copy must be kept for future reference and the other must be send (along with attested copies of mark sheets) to the address Post box no: 476, Goldak Khana, GPO, and New Delhi 110001. Last date for online registration (for sailor recruitment 2013) is 31st December 2012. Print copy of the application form should reach the office address before January 6th 2013.
