The Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests is shortly called as “MoEF” and it is a nodal agency in the Central Government’s Administrative Structure responsible for sketching, promoting, coordinating and taking care of the environmental policies and programmes.
The ministry frames policies for conservation of the natural resources of the nation inclusive of rivers and lakes, for ensuring the welfare of animals and for the prevention and abatement of pollution. For carrying out these functions effectively, the ministry recruits scientists to work for the different agencies listed below:
• Zoological Survey of India
• Botanical Survey of India
• National River Conservation Directorate
• National Institute of Animal Welfare
• Forest Survey of India
• Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy
Scientist recruitments are conducted by the ministry either on deputation or on direct recruitment basis.
Educational qualification required to apply for scientist position in MoEF:
When it comes to scientist recruitment in MoEF, the ministry recruits candidates for different positions like Scientist G, Scientist C, Scientist F, Scientist E and Scientist B. When it comes to educational qualification requirement for these positions, the requirement differs based on the agency for which the ministry calls for application from candidates.
Some instances are given below:
• When scientist position is called for Zoological Survey of India, the ministry requires that candidates must be Ph. D in Zoology or PG Degree in Zoology
• When it comes to recruitment for the ministry itself, it requires candidates to be Ph. D holders in Environmental Sciences.
Therefore, general requirement is that candidates must be PG degree or Ph. D holders in appropriate subjects/field.
Pay scale offered to scientists in MoEF:
Pay scales offered for Scientist positions in MoEF are given below:
• Scientist G – “Rs.37400-67000 with Grade Pay of Rs.10,000”
• Scientist C – “Rs.15600-39100 with Grade Pay of Rs.6600”
• Scientist F – “Rs.37400-67000 with Grade Pay of Rs.8900”
• Scientist E – “Rs.37400-67000 with Grade Pay of Rs.8700”
• Scientist B – “Rs.15600-39100 with Grade Pay of Rs.5400”

Generally, MoEF issues notification for scientist position in leading employment newspapers/dailies and along with the notification the format of application is also attached. Neatly handwritten application in the same format as specified by MoEF should be submitted by the candidates.

Job responsibilities of scientists:
Generally, job responsibilities for this position of scientist differ according to the agency for which candidates are appointed. For instance, job responsibilities of scientist “C” appointed for the ministry itself includes the following:
• Policy co-ordination and planning for the protection of environment
• Regeneration and afforestation of degraded areas for protecting environment
• Assisting organizations involved in the implementation of forestry and environmental training, education, extension and research activities
• Creation of environmental awareness among people belonging to the nation
Mode of selection to scientist position in MoEF:
In general, selection of candidates for the position of scientist is done based on written test and candidates getting through the written test will be invited for face to face interview.
