Radio Jockey, Career as Radio Jockey
A Radio Jockey or RJ in short is one who is supposed to entertain callers in chat shows, obviously aired by Radio. A radio jockey must interact with audience (callers) either through telephone or by email and online chat. Ordinarily, radio jockeys select the music to be played both considering choices from audiences or by himself and also selects topics to discuss with the audience, and making the interaction fun for the callers as well.
The term Radio jockey comes from the word Disco Jockey who entertains people in discotheques. Radio jockeys can have varying payrolls and the payroll will be proportional to their skill in entertaining people and their experience. Amateur radio jockeys can work for a fixed salary and which will increase in experience. Although the advent of TV and Internet entertainment diminished radio listeners considerably, but the arrival of private channel FM radio rejuvenated the radio followers.
Basically, a radio jockey needs to have the following qualities:
- They shouldn’t have inhibitions while interacting with the audience
- They should have a unique style and shouldn’t act indifferent
- They should have a good sense of humour and voice performance qualities
- They shouldn’t be monotonous
- They should be fluent
- They should be confident and should be able to persevere
- They should be aware of all the events taking place in their region
- They should be aware of what’s going on around them in the society as well as new and popular music, movies etc
Scope as Radio Jockey
Radio jockeys can have decent salary on contractual basis. They will also be able to make money and get famous with commercial advertisements. Experienced Radio jockeys with a big following would attract other FM stations, eventually giving the RJs better offers and bigger salary. If they really prove their talent and become famous, they can switch to being video jockeys or use their talent to be actors in movies.

A radio jockey who can prove his worth with his linguistic skills and personality can achieve bigger heights in this area. A radio jockey who has a recognized and well applauded skill and talent, with good knowledge in a foreign language can easily get a place in Foreign FM stations. This can get them a better remuneration, not to mention earning a celebrity lifestyle.
Salary range
Radio Jockey novice can earn a salary between Rs 7,000/- and Rs 15,000/- per month. Greater the recognition, an RJ gets for his voice and personality; the greater will be the salary. Experienced RJs can earn between Rs 15,000/- to Rs 70,000/- or more per month. And this excludes the income from advertisements.
