Eligibility and Exam Pattern for UPSC Geologist Exam
Recruitment to the post of Geologist in various public sector organizations is conducted on the basis of performance in written test and personal interview, conducted by UPSC. Candidates who have Masters’ degree in Geology and related subjects are eligible to apply. They should be in the age group of 21 and 32 years at the time of application. There will be descriptive type questions in written test.
Eligibility Criterion for UPSC Geologist Exam
Nationality
Indian citizens and also those candidates who have migrated from countries such as Nepal, Bhutan and other East African countries are eligible to apply for this post. Those who have migrated from other countries are required to submit the certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
Age Requirements
Candidates who have completed 21 years of age at the time of application are only eligible to apply. Upper age limit for the exam is 32 years. Government servants who are working in Geological Survey of India can avail relaxation of 7 years in upper age limit. Candidates belonging to reserved categories and State of Jammu & Kashmir can claim age relaxation as per the norms issued by the Government of India. In case of candidates belong to Ex-Servicemen including Commissioned Officers who have a minimum of five years Military Service can enjoy relaxation in upper age limit of 5 years.

Candidates who posses Post Graduation in following disciplines from a recognized University are eligible to the post of Geologist

- Earth Science
- Engineering Geology
- Geo- Exploration
- Geochemistry
- Geological Science
- Geology
- Marine Geology
- Mineral Exploration
- Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies
- Petroleum Geosciences
- Resource Management
Those who have completed post graduation from foreign Universities are also eligible. Final year students who are awaiting results can also apply for the exam. Such candidates will have to submit their final year mark sheet at the time of interview.
Candidates are required to be physically fit as per the physical standards for admission to Geologists’ Examination.
Exam Pattern for UPSC Geologist Exam
The exam contains the following papers such as:
- General English
- Geology Paper I
- Geology Paper II
- Geology Paper III
Each section will contain descriptive type questions. Medium of instruction will be English language and candidates are required to answer only in English Language. Candidates are allowed to pocket calculators. Time duration allotted for each section is 3 hours. All the subject papers, except General English carries maximum of 200 marks. Questions from General English carry 100 marks.
