the best book for the gate exam for any subject is the the GK publishers gate book ,its probably the best book for the gate exam.the problems are of great standard and also the solutions given for the solved examples are self explanatory and really help full in clearing the doubts of the reader ,
as for as the c language is concerned the best book would be yashwant kanitkar ,its the best book for the c language
also the materials of the brilliant tutorials are very good for the computer science students,you should surely follow it,

Best books for gate exam is your text books refereed by university syllabus , They have every thing you need . Also refer only standard books , we cant tell you good books without specifying branch of yours .So in general concentrate on third year subjects , because subjects asked in GATE exam are mainly from third year .
