Eligibility Criterion For Joining IMA

IMA (Indian Military Academy) is meant for the candidates who are in their final year of graduation or have already completed their graduation..

There is no such exam after 10th through which you can join the Army directly..

Though, after clearing your 12th exam..you can appear for the National Defense Academy (NDA) Exam which is conducted every year in the months of April and August..

For appearing in the exam you must be within the age limit of 16.5-19 years and must be 12th appearing or a 12th pass out..

The exam consists of 2 papers..

The 1st exam will test your general knowledge and current affairs..

The 2nd exam shall test you on the basis of your knowledge of Science,Maths and English..

you need to know the criteria.

1.CDSE::

Eligibility ::

You should be between 19-24 years of age.
You must have completed you degree in any stream .
In this you have to take written exam and if you clear it you will get call for SSB.

2.UES::
This is a university entry scheme.
You must be between 21 to 24 years of age
You must have completed you engineering degree in notified stream.
There is no written exam and you will direct get call for SSB .

3.TGC::
This is a short service commission .
You must be between 21 to 24 years of age
You must have completed you engineering degree in notified stream.
There is no written exam and you will direct get call for SSB .

After 10th you cannot join IMA.

You can Indian Military after completing 12th standard by giving NDA Entrance Exam.

NDA- National Defence Academy...

NDA Entrance Exam is conducted by UPSC every Year for two times as NDA I & NDA II.


Eligibility criteria for Indian Army:

• You should have completed 12th standard in any stream(Science/Commerce/Arts) from recognized university/board.

• You can also appear in NDA exam while in 12th standard.

• Your Age should be in between 16.5 to 19 years.

• You should be Indian Citizen. Should be unmarried Male & Male candidate.

• You should be physically & mentally fit.

Pattern & Syllabus of NDA entrance Exam:



There will be written Examination for total of 900 marks in two Subjects

Mathematics - Maximum marks is 300 and the duration of the test is 2.5 Hrs.

General Ability Test - Maximum marks is 600 and the duration of the test is 2.5 Hrs.

The papers in both the subjects will consist of objective type questions only.

I appreciate your interest of joining in Indian Army soon after the completion of your 10th class itself to serve the country.

But unfortunately you are not eligible to make entry into Indian Army with 10th class as the minimum academic qualification.

The minimum academic qualification that is required for the candidates to join Indian Army is completion of 12th class with any of the stream.

For this you have to crack NDA Exam being conducted two times in a year by UPSC.

Through this exam, the candidates can also join
Indian Navy
Indian Air Force

If you want to join IMA (Indian Military Academy) you have to crack CDS (Combined Defence Services Exam).

This Exam is also being conducted by UPSC.

But the thing is that you should have completed Graduation with any of the stream in order to apply for IMA through CDS Exam.

To apply for NDA Exam, required age for you is 16.5 years to 19 years.

To apply for IMA through CDS, required age is 19-24 years.

Decide yourself of which exam you want to apply for and complete the respective academic course accordingly.
