To have a better career in Criminal Bureau of Investigation, one must apply for it after graduating. After completion of graduation, in any discipline, candidate may write Combined Graduate Level Examination which is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for recruitment of Sub-Inspector in this department.
The selection procedure of the examination comprise of the two written stages and an interview along with few skill tests.

As far as Criminal Investigation Department is concerned, to be apart of it, one must join the Police Department, first of all because the CID is nothing but one of the special wing that every state police has got and is responsible for handling specific criminal cases. After completion of graduation, one may appear for entrance examination conducted by the respective state police for recruitment of Sub-Inspector. Apart from this, one may also join the Police Department by qualifying civil service examination. Candidates who qualifies this examination are selected for Indian Police Service and are posted to a specific state, for a period of time, as an Assistant Commissioner of Police, also designated as Assistant Superintendent of Police in certain states.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

CBI :

To join the CBI, you will need to appear for Combined Graduate Preliminary Exam, conducted by the SSC (Staff Selection commission) every year.


The minimum eligible age is 20 years & the maximum age limit is 27 years with relaxation of upto 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC.


Height: 165 cms
Chest: 76 cms. with expansion


The examination comprises of two papers.
1. General intelligence & awareness
2. Arithmatic


After clear the preliminary exam then followed by the Main exam.

CID :

For becoming a CID officer you will need to appear for the UPSC exam. There are various levels in which you can join the department.

The minimum requirement is that the candidate should complete at least 12th standard. But if you are interested in joining a higher level then you need to be a graduate.

If you want join at the officer level then minimum of graduation is required. Graduation or post graduation in criminology is the preferred course.

age should be between 20-27 years.

For the CBI or CID officer job post you have to write the entrance exam which has been conducted by the UPSC departments

To join CBI you need to appear for CGPE exam i.e. Combined Graduate preliminary Exam which is conducted by SSC board every year.

Those candidate are graduate from any recognized university with any discipline are eligible for CBI exam.(Criminology)

But your age should be in between 20 to 27 years old.Age relaxation is provide for SC/ST/OBC category as per govt rule.

The maximum attempts for SC/ST candidate is Unlimited. For OBC candidate it is 7 years and for general candidate it will be 5 years.

Also you must be in citizen in India.

The selection process is contain in two stage

In first stage written test:-

1)General question ---------- 200marks
2)English -------------------200 marks

In second stage you can faced an interview which is contain 100 marks.

You can Join CID/CBI Branch as an Officer of Grade II by giving IB(Intelligence Bureau) Exam.

Nationality :- Indian.

Educational qualification :-
