You have an open option of selection of course duration. It is much advisable to have degree in English prior to journalism field. Although it is not essential one to have the same, but to have preficiency in English communication it is necessary to have it in advance. Even in Journalism course/certificate there is a seperate module of mass communication topic. Some candidates choose an option of having bachelor degree in English literature and PG in journalism or mass communication , which are relative one.
