Eligibility for GATE Exam:
  • **either Bachelor degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture
  • **either Master degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications
  • **either Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology
only these candidates can apply ..

Coming to the subject chosen it is always expected to choose a subject which you have studied for past 4years as the pattern depends upon the subjects of your 4years subjects... and if you think you can crack GATE with computer science then yes you can....

and take a subject in M.Tech of your choice or related to your subjects...

Yes, a person who holds a degree of B. E. or B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering is allowed to write the GATE examination in Computer Science and Engineering. Every person who gives GATE exam is given a GATE score card which remains valid for 2 years. Depending on the GATE score, the candidate gets the institute and the subject.

Since your branch is Mechanical Engineering, it will be very difficult for you to obtain a high GATE score in CSE. You will have to study the whole syllabus of B. Tech. CSE which is not easy. So you better write the GATE exam with Mechanical.

There is no age restriction. A person can give as many attempts as he wants. A person can appear in GATE while he is in the prefinal or final year of his engineering or after completing his engg. Only requirement is that you should have a BE or BTech degree in any branch from a recognised university.

Well yes you can take the exam but i do not think that you will be able to clear the exam.Because GATE exam is different for all streams students .So if you thinks that you can take the exams in computer science after studying the mechanical engineering then yes you can do this .

But i do not think that it will be useful for you in any way in terms of finding the jobs. Because students do Mtech to get a more technical knowledge in their streams but here you are changing your streams so i would suggest you to take a exams in mechanical engineering only and pursue your Mtech in mechanical engineering.

Eligibility for GATE::

You must have done your 4 year engineering .
MSC students are also eligible for the examination .
Pre final year students can also appear for the exam
There is no limit the number of times you can appear for the exam.

GATE score is valid for 2 years.
