It is possible but it might not be a wise decision. If you have confidence and study materials along with suggestion and last 10 years question papers then you can give it a try. Candidates are selected on the basis of GATE results in the best Engineering Institutes of India like IIT's and NIT's. Hence, you must know the importance and exam pattern for self studying for entrance examination like GATE.
