To join as merchant navy officers you have to pass either 4 year B.E/B.Tech course in Marine Engineering or 3-year bachelor degree course in B.Sc Nautical science. There are four Govt merchant navy institutes : i. Training Ship Chanakya, Navi Mumbai. ii. Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata. iii. Dear friend
You can appear Indian Engineering services which is supposed to be very prestigious exam for engineers. On qualifying IES you can opt for Indian Naval Armament Service (mechanical engineering posts). Another way; You can do some course related to ocean engineering and naval architecture. IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur offers M.Tech in Ocean Engineering on the basis of GATE. Mechanical Engineers can apply for this M.Tech program and join the navy sector. |

Re: Procedure to join Merchant Navy
There are pre-sea and post-sea training institutes under the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface Transport. On successful completion of training the candidates are eligible to take up jobs on board Indian/foreign vessels.
I am specifying the name and brief detail of some institutes in which courses are offered. (i) Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, Hay Bunder, Tank Road Mumbai-400033. is one of the largest institutes in Asia in terms of student turn over;offers post-sea training to the Marine officers of both deck and engine in 32 various courses (ii) Marine Engineering and Research Institutes (MERI),P-19 Taratola Road Calcutta –700088./Hay Bunder Tank Road Mumbai-400033. The institute at Calcutta, which has a capacity of 120 students per year provides 4 years degree course in Marine Engineering (iii) T. S. Chanakya, Karave Navi Mumbai-400706. The shore based academy was earlier known as T. S. Dufferin and later as T. S. Rajendra; The institute conducts two types of courses :- 1. 3 years degree course in Nautical Science with an intake capacity of 80 cadets per course under aegis of University of Mumbai. 2. 3 months pre-sea training course with an intake capacity of 120 cadets per course For admission to these colleges one has to take test.Admission to MERI and T. S. Chanakya are through a joint entrance examination conducted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at national level. For the 3 months pre-sea cadets course, the candidates have to be sponsored by various shipping companies. For 6 months Trainee Mechanical Engineering course, candidates possessing degree in mechanical engineering have to be sponsored by shipping companies. For post-sea training course at LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, the marine officers themselves approach the institutes for updating their technical competency according to the needs of STCW’ 95 and other stipulation laid down by IMO and Government of India Apart from this IGNOU OPENNET test is also conducted every year. |

Re: Procedure to join Merchant Navy
The maximum age limit for joining for the course is 25 years. There are two options available for the candidate to join this stream. The first one is to join after the 12th standard. The other option is after Graduation. During the graduations candidates who are from Marine Engineering background can join directly. Those from Mechanical Engineering and B.Sc background will need to undergo Pre Sea training. Since you are from Mechanical engineering background you are eligible to join. However you will need to undergo a year of pre sea training. There will be an entrance exam and interview round. This will be followed by Physical Fitness test.
