What is the difference between DNA and RNA?

How to differentiate between DNA and RNA if there is only one option to do that i.e. just on the basis of the color reactions?

The main difference between DNA and RNA is the sugar present in the molecules. While the sugar present in an RNA molecule is ribose, the sugar present in a molecule of DNA is deoxyribose. Deoxyribose is the same as ribose, except that the former has one more OH.

DNA does not usually exist as a single molecule, but instead as a tightly-associated pair of molecules. These two long strands entwine like vines, in the shape of a double helix. This arrangement of DNA strands is called antiparallel. The asymmetric ends of DNA strands are referred to as the 5′ (five prime) and 3′ (three prime) ends. One of the major differences between DNA and RNA is the sugar, with 2-deoxyribose being replaced by the alternative pentose sugar ribose in RNA. The four bases found in DNA are adenine (abbreviated A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). A fifth pyrimidine base, called uracil (U), usually takes the place of thymine in RNA and differs from thymine by lacking a methyl group on its ring.
Comparison chart

DNA RNA
Stands for: DeoxyriboNucleicAcid RiboNucleicAcid
Definition: A nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all modern living organisms(scientists believe that RNA may have been the main genetic material in primitive life forms). A single-stranded chain of alternating phosphate and ribose units with the bases Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Uracil bonded to the ribose. RNA molecules are involved in protein synthesis and sometimes in the transmission of genetic information.
Job/Role: Medium of long-term storage and transmission of genetic information Transfer the genetic code needed for the creation of proteins from the nucleus to the ribosome.
Unique Features: The helix geometry of DNA is of B-Form. DNA is completely protected by the body, i.e., the body destroys enzymes that cleave DNA. DNA can be damaged by exposure to Ultra-violet rays The helix geometry of RNA is of A-Form. RNA strands are continually made, broken down and reused. RNA is more resistant to damage by Ultra-violet rays.
Predominant Structure: Double- stranded molecule with a long chain of nucleotides A single-stranded molecule in most of its biological roles and has a shorter chain of nucleotides
Bases & Sugars: Deoxyribose sugar; phosphate backbone; Four bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine Ribose sugar; phosphate backbone. Four bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and uracil
Pairing of Bases: A-T(Adenine-Thymine), G-C(Guanine-Cytosine) A-U(Adenine-Uracil), G-C(Guanine-Cytosine)
Stability: Deoxyribose sugar in DNA is less reactive because of C-H bonds. Stable in alkaline conditions. DNA has smaller grooves, which makes it harder for enzymes to "attack" DNA. Ribose sugar is more reactive because of C-OH (hydroxyl) bonds. Not stable in alkaline conditions. RNA has larger grooves, which makes it easier to be attacked by enzymes.
Propagation: DNA is self-replicating. RNA is synthesized from DNA when needed.

The main difference is sugar present in the molecules.Sugar present in RNA is 'ribose'.and in DNA is 'deoxy-ribose'.

Friend,

I Give you full Details About DNA & RNA =>>

DNA ==>

DNA full form is Deoxy Ribonucleic Acid.DNA is one of the three major macromolecules essential for all known forms of life.

DNA Contain four Chemical Base:
Adenine (A)
Guanine (G)
Cytosine (C)
Thymine (T)

DNA Contain Bio-logical Information of Our life. DNA is Also Responsible for Genetics.
DNA have two Stands which rum in Opposite Direction of Each-Other. DNA is Self-Replicating. DNA is very Sensitive to Ultra-Violet Rays.

RNA ==>

RNA Full form is Ribonucleic Acid. his is huge difference between DNA & RNA that DNA Contains De-oxy Ribose Sugar and RNA Contain Ribose Sugar molecules. RNA is very Resist to Ultra-Violet Rays.

RNA Contain Four Chemical Base:
Adenine(A)
Guanine(G)
Uracil(U)
Cytosine(C)

RNA is synthesized from DNA when needed.Mainly RNA Three Types:
m-RNA(Messenger)
t-RNA(Transferable)
r-RNA(Ribosomal)

Good Luck.........

Different Between DNA and RNA-->

DNA:--DNA is made from DeoxyriboNucleic Acid and DNA is double stranded. It is self-replicating.Long-term storage of genetic information; transmission of genetic information to make other cells and new organisms. DNA has thymine (T), guanine (G), adenine (A) and cytosine (C). G is always paired with C and A is always paired with T in DNA. DNA is susceptible to UV damage.

RNA:-- RNA is made from RiboNucleic Acid.RNA is single stranded. RNA is synthesized from DNA when needed. There is no thymine in RNA used to transfer the genetic code from the nucleus to the ribosomes to make proteins. RNA is used to transmit genetic information in some rganisms and may have been the molecule used to store genetic blueprints in primitive organisms. Compared with DNA, RNA is relatively resistant to UV damage.

DNA is Deoxyribonucleic Acid and RNA is Ribonucleic Acid.

To distinguish RNA and DNA with a color reactions you have to perform Bial's Test on the sample.

-RNA Undergoes Bial's Test to give furfural upon heating in acidic medium which when reacts with orcinol and Fecl3 gives blue green color. The test is positive for RNA.

-DNA doesn't form furfural with Bial's test. The product formed after Bial's test when reacts with oricnol and fecl3 gives yellow color.

So you can can distinguish a DNA from RNA by performing above test if you are only looking for a color test.

Hi friend,

DNA stands for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid.
RNA stands for RiboNucleic Acid.

DNA and RNA both contains bases.
DNA contains adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine.
But in NDA thymine is not there, instead uracil is there.

DNA contains all the genetic information that are required to construct cell.
RNA converts this information in specific way with the gathering of proteins. It transmits the information outside the nucleus of the cell.

DNA is shaped like a ladder or like a telephone cord.
RNA has many forms in living beings, that are:

1.mRNA:
It is a single stranded RNA. This carry genetic informatic from the nucleas and transfer it to the ribosomes.

2.tRNA:
It shaped like clover leaf.

3.rRNA
It has very complex structure. It gives ribosomes the ctalytic activity and It also enable the protein synthesis.

I hope the information helps you.

Thank you..............
