Dear Aspirant,

The Eligibility criteria of the UGC-NET are given below:

1. Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognised by UGC in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this Test. The Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Physically Handicapped (PH)/Visually Handicapped (VH) category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.

However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for award of JRF/Lectureship eligibility only after they have passed their Master’s degree examination or equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST/PH/VH category candidates). Such candidates must complete their P.G. degree examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.

3. The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed by 19th September, 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e., from 55% to 50%) for appearing in NET.

The National Eligibility Test by the University Grants Commission is conducted for College lectureship and Junior Research Fellowship. Regardless of which of the two you want to appear, the qualification criteria remains the same.

The qualification criteria is post graduation degree. Either you should have obtained the degree or you must be in final year of post graduation to apply for the National Eligibility Test.

In case you apply for NET during the final year please remember the following points very carefully.

1. You will have to submit the degree within 2 years of clearing the NET exam. Otherwise UGC will disqualify you.

2. Please ensure that you can meet the percentage criteria of the exam. If you decided to appear for exam during final year and failed to meet the percentage criteria after passing post graduation, it will also result in disqualification.

The NET exam is conducted in June and December. You can also apply for SET exam which is conducted separately by the each state. The criteria remains the same for both the exams.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Only Indian nationals can appear for it.

2. You will have to complete post graduation to apply for it.

3. Complete PG from a UGC recognized college.

4. Secure minimum of 55 percent marks in the course.

5. SC/ST need 50 percent marks.

6. Also eligible to appear during final year as mentioned above.

7. The subject for NET should be related to your post graduation course.

8. You are allowed to appear for NET as many times as you like.

Age Limit

1. You should not cross 28 years if applying for JRF.

2. Age limit is extended by 31 years for OBC.

3. Five years relaxation means SC/ST can apply till 33 years.

4. No upper age limit for lectureship.
