Yes Mechanical Engineers are eligible for SSC CGL exam. In fact any Graduates are eligible for SSC CGL exam, if he/she has done Graduation from a recognized University. Therefore, you can start your preparation for this exam as soon as possible.

The age limit for SSC CGL exam is 18 to 27 years for General category candidates. There is age relaxation for reserved category candidates.

SC/ST: 5 years relaxation
OBC : 3 years relaxation
PWD: 10 years relaxation

Selection Procedure:

Tier I Exam
Tier II Exam
Interview or Skill test on the basis of the post.

Yeah you can apply for that. Any candidate who have passed graduation in any of stream from a recognized university can apply for the exam.
