A gemology course basically consists of topics like gems identification, colouring, drawing techniques, metallurgical processes and elements of fashion. It also consists of design methodology, ornament making, ornament designing, computer aided design and specialization in jewellery designing.

The most important quality, which a gemologist should possess, is good hand-eye coordination, concentration and patience as the work is delicate in nature and precise.
