Subarnapur District is also called as Sonepur District and the district acts as an administrative district in the state of Orissa. The district is located in the eastern part of the country and the town of Sonepur is the headquarters of the district and the people of the district are called as Sonepuria. Even though, the former name of the district was Sonepur, its name was changed after Somavasi rules as Subarnapur District.

Subarnapur District is bounded by the districts of Baudh, Balangir, Angul, Sambalpur and Bargarh Districts of the state of Orissa. The district receives funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme along with 19 other districts in the state of Orissa.
