This university was thought of  in the minds of people like Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhai Patel in as late as the year of 1920 but the university finally came into existence and that too a physical one around the independence of the country in 1949.  The university was then commissioned under the act of the state government of Gujarat so as to establish a teaching and affiliating university in the state.  During the course of its time which today reaches almost 5 decades, the university has seen many sub universities being carved out from the jurisdiction reign of this university. These universities have gone forward to be by themselves as the independent universities of the state. Apart from these parts of the university separating out, this university is still the largest university serving education to almost 2 lakh students in the state with over 235 colleges, 24 approved and 15 other recognised institutions in its kitty. The other centres of the university include 221 post graduate centres.

The university today serves as an affiliating university at the under graduate level for the courses in that domain while it serves to be a teaching university when it comes to the post graduate and doctoral programs. These programs that are so willingly offered by the university are as follows:

Doctoral programs: this includes the fields of medicine and philosophy.

Post graduate and under graduate courses that are offered by the university includes all the different faculties and departments of the university like medicine, engineering, science, arts, philosophy, education, commerce, law, Business administration, computer application, forensic science etc.

The university also offers the certificate and other diploma courses that are so introduced in order to be quite specific for the employment generation for the people undergoing them.

The admission forms for the application into the university are available online or can be collected form the campus in hand. This application for each student is considered for the allotting of the seats. Despite this some share of the seats are combined with the central entrance exams like AIEEE etc.
