Database Engineer - How to become a Database Engineer?
Database is the storage of data that is involved in the management of complicated software programmes. Having a proper database management is one of the most important challenges faced by any business firm which needs the storage, manipulation or dissemination of data.
Professionals who manage all these databases are called database engineers. They are responsible to establish effectively the methods to organize and store the data. They have to transfer these data from out dated systems to new systems in many situations. Some of their initial functions include supervising the installation and checking of new products and software in the database, providing access to different users, modifying existing databases, troubleshooting the errors occurred etc.
These highly qualified professionals will also have some secondary jobs like creation of data dictionary for a company, reviewing rules and procedures in a database management manual, training members of web development team or even the database development group. They must also work with the network administration section to ensure security measures involved in the databases connected to the internet.
Qualifying Exam
Candidates holding at least a bachelor’s degree in computer related subjects are required by most of the companies that recruit database engineers. But for the entry level jobs, candidates with a two year degree and relevant work experience are eligible. However the candidates must acquire an undergraduate degree in computer science or MIS or information science from any reputed universities for the database engineer jobs. Candidates with master’s degree and above along with experience in concerned field will be recruited in higher positions of database management jobs.

Numerous universities and colleges in the country offer the undergraduate degree programme in computer related disciplines. Those candidates who have completed their higher secondary education in any of the science subjects can apply for the bachelor’s degree programmes in computer science or related subjects. Apart from this educational qualification they should have strong knowledge in database management subjects. Certification course will help them to acquire these specializations.

- Pursue 10+2 in any of the science subjects with Mathematics as a compulsory subject.
- Obtain the bachelor’s degree in computer related subject from any reputed universities.
- Acquire certification courses in database subjects like SQL, ORACLE, etc.
- Search and apply for the positions of database engineers in the firms which recruit candidates for these jobs.
- Pursue Master’s degree or above in the same field for high position jobs in the database management field.
Skills required for a Data Base Engineer
A database engineer should possess strong skills to perform well in this field. They should have good analytical and logical thinking ability. They must have a thorough knowledge in the DBMS and the query languages. In addition they also need knowledge in programming languages. Sometimes they may be called upon to work as the technical support in certain client application tasks. Apart from the educational qualifications they need good problem solving ability, communication and interpersonal skills.
