IGNOU, Indira Gandhi Open University, carry out an entrance test at the national level for its admission process in various distance learning management courses. IGNOU is well known for its offering of management courses in the distance learning mode. Based upon the entrance exam, the qualified students get admission into programs like PGDM, Diploma and MBA etc. The exam is conducted twice in a year i.e. August and February.

Structure of OPEN MAT

The exam is in objective type mode. The students will get multiple options and have to choose the right answer. The exam does not have negative marking and thus students can freely attend the questions. The exam is held for three hours with 200 questions. The topics are divided into

  • General awareness
  • English language
  • Quantitative aptitude
  • Reasoning

Syllabus for OPEN MAT

The general awareness carries 30 marks and consists of questions regarding current happening and issues and aspects from the dailies. They need to update their knowledge through the magazines and newspaper.

The general awareness session evaluate the candidate’s knowledge in the English language. The topics include grammar, phrase and idioms, reading comprehensions. It also includes the sentence construction, synonyms and antonyms etc.  Total mark allotted for this session is 50.

Quantitative aptitude section also carries 50 questions and includes the topics of geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and arithmetic and statistics.

The reasoning carries more weightage and will generally have 70 questions. This is to analyse the applicant’s ability to solve problems regarding data interpretation, arguments and coding etc.

This exam being similar to exams like CAT, MAT books written R.S Agarwal, Oswal, Ajay Singh etc.

Study Plan for for Open Management Admission Test

An effective preparation in each area will help the students to get through the exam. The questions are usually easy but the students found difficulty in completing the paper in the allotted time constrain. This will overcome by practicing again and again. They can find their own way to perform well in the exam. For example some will be good in quant and take more time in the comprehension part. Then he/she can finish the quantitative part and then go through the English part. They can also analyse the strong and weak point through mock tests and improve accordingly. More importantly take the exam with a confident and relaxed mind.
