Jobs in Railways
Indian railway is considered as one of the largest employer of civilians in the world. This sector employs as many as 1.5 million people. As a matter of fact, a career with Indian railways is rewarding and offer lot of security for its employees. The employees of the Indian railways can be categorized into 4 Groups. They are Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D. Railway officers of the uppermost ranks belong to Group ‘A’ whilst officers of the lowest position belong to Group ‘D’.
Officers of Group ‘A’ are recruited by the UPSC, SCRA, IRAS and the IRTS etc. There are no specific exams for Group ‘B’ category. Majority of employees are promoted directly from Group C. Besides this, the employees of Group ‘C’ & Group ‘D’ are recruited through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs).
Railway Departments
For the reason of administration, the Indian Railways has been separated into different Zones. There are quite a few departments and divisions under each zone. Each division has a definite number of non-technical as well as technical departments.
The technical department of the railway requires professionals in the fields of civil, telecommunication, mechanical and Electrical engineering. The non – technical department is concerned with general services such as personal management, accounts, defense and railway protection force (RPF).
Pay scale of Technical departments
Employees of Group ‘A’ will have a salary that will range from Rs. 9300 - 34800. The designations of the employees of Group ‘A’ are given below:
- Assistant Manager/ Projects
- Assistant Manager/IT
- Draughtsman
- DCOS
- Senior Material manager
- Assistant Material Manager
- Assistant Controller Officer
Pay scale of Non-technical departments
General Managers, Controller of stores and Deputy COS come under the category of Group A of the non technical departments. They will have a pay scale of Rs. 15600–67000.
Individuals who come under the category of Group ‘B’ are Accounts Assistant, Office Assistant / Vigilance, Private Secretary and Personal Assistant. They have a pay scale that will range from Rs. 9300 - 34800.
Employees of Group ‘C’ include UDC, LDC, office superintendent, Head clerk, senior clerk and junior clerk and their pay scale range from Rs. 5,200- 20,200.
The other auxiliary staff of the railways belongs to Group ‘D’. They will have a pay that will range from Rs. 4440 - Rs. 7440.
Pros about Jobs in Railway Sector
Indian Railways provide their staff with City compensatory allowances, Transport allowances, Deputation allowances and HRA in addition to LTC. Besides this, for women staff, the Indian railways offer Maternity Leaves which is quite an advantage for working women. On top of this, the children’s of the Indian railway staff will also get an allowance for their education. Apart from all these facilities, the Indian Railways also offer their employees with financial upgrading as well as automatic career progression after the success full completion of 10, 20 and 30 years of their service. For the individuals who have retired from service, the railways provide them with gratuity and pension. In addition to all this, the employees of the railways will also get railway quarters for their stay.
Cons about Jobs in Railway Sector
Like every other job, the railways jobs also have its own negatives. One of the biggest negative aspects is the frequent transfers of employees. The employees have less option as far as career growth is concerned and on top of this the progression of their career will be very slow. In addition to this employees who are part of the Indian railway will have very minimal dynamism in their job because of the routine nature of the job.
