Himachal Pradesh University is one of the important universities in India conducting research and teaching. The university was formed in the year 1970 on the 22nd of July by a Legislative Act of Himachal Pradesh. The campus of the university is situated at a distance of about 5 km from town at the Summer Hills of Shimla within 200 acres in the neighborhood of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies.

The educational and research activities of the university are funded by UGC and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. The UGC has awarded the university with A grade certification. The university has 27 teaching departments offering post-graduation and under-graduation courses in engineering, Sanskrit, medical, education and dental faculties. Himachal Pradesh University is acting as both affiliating and residential university and the campus of the university includes different teaching departments, hostels for boys and girls, residential complexes, offices and a library. In addition to the affiliated colleges, a regional centre at Dharamshala, a university college of business studies, a university evening college, and distance education and open learning centers are functioning under the university. Initially, only seven engineering colleges were affiliated to the university, but the number of engineering colleges under this university has increased. Mr. Hamid Karzai, who is the president of Afghanistan, Mr. Anand Sharma, who is the Minister of Commerce and Industry in Indian Government and Mr. Tsering Dundup, Tibetan Youth Congress’s Public Relation Officer are some of the notable alumni of the Himachal Pradesh University.
