The Government of Bihar established the Chanakya National Law University in the year 2006 with a view to offer quality legal education along with the lines of the established National Law Schools like NALSAR of Hyderabad, NUJS of Kolkata and NLSIU of Bangalore. The ex-officio chancellor of the university was the Chief Justice of Patna High Court. At present, the position is held by the Chief Justice Honorable Justice Miss. Rekha Manharlal Doshit.

The university is affiliated by the Bar Council of India and by the University Grants Commission. Admission of students to the law courses offered by the university is based on the CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) score of the students.

Achievements of the university:

Chanukya Law University has created a niche for itself in a very short span of time and it is now known nationally for legal courses. The university has made several achievements nationally and internationally and some of its achievements are listed below:

The university has won the ‘most dignified team’ award at the 6th National Law School Parliamentary Debate Competition, which was organized by the National Law School of India University at Bangalore

Won the ‘best team’ award at the SPOCULIT organized by the Ram Manohar Lohiya Law University

The university has won the ‘fourth best memorial’ and was a semi-finalist in the Philip.C.Jessup International Moot Court Competition

Apart from these honors, the university has won several other honors as well in the field of law, which clearly shows the quality of legal education offered by the university.
