MGM in the name of the institute stands for Mahatma Gandhi Mission and it is the trust under which the institute was established. After having began its journey as a institution, MGM Institute of Health Sciences was converted as Deemed to be University through a notification issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the India Government on the 30th of August 2006. This notification was followed by a letter from the University Grants Commission permitting the Deemed universities to use the term ‘University’ with their names and therefore the management of the institution, decided to rename it as MGM University of Health Sciences.
The university is being sponsored by the Mahatma Gandhi Mission Trust that was established in the year 1982 with a view to propagate education, research and services to humanity. As from the name of the university, MGM Institute is a university meant for offering courses pertaining to the field of medicine and its related disciplines. It has campuses at Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad. The university was offering education through two of its constituent colleges namely MGM Medical College at Navi Mumbai and another colleges with the same name in the city of Aurangabad. However, the university presently has colleges in the disciplines of health management, nursing, biomedical sciences and physiotherapy. The total number of constituent colleges of the university at the Aurangabad campus is four, while that of Navi Mumbai campus is six. The university visualizes to become the best private medical university by the year 2020.
