Rani Channama University came into existence in the year 2010 and before the establishment of this university, the KRCPG Centre of the Karnatak University was functioning at Belagavi. This centre came into existence in the year 1982 to offer an opportunity to the students of the northern part of Karnataka for higher education. This center was later shifted to the present campus and it was declared as Rani Channamma University in the year 2010 during the month of July. The jurisdiction of this university is spread over the districts of Bagalkot, Bijapur and Belagavi and it meets the educational requirements of the people of the northern region of the state of Karnataka.

Rani Channama University present offers courses in the faculties of management, commerce, social science, education, science and arts right from UG courses up to M. Phil and Ph. D courses. The university also offers post graduate diploma course in computer applications and more than 100 students has been awarded M. Phil and Ph. D degree within a short period of the establishment of the university. The university follows semester pattern of education for some courses, while non-semester pattern is followed for some of the courses.
