This prestigious Institute was established on 25th May, 1998 and has been since then been an autonomous Institute governed directly by the Department of Ocean Development, as also abbreviated DOD. The Institute was established with enhancing the Indian Antarctic programs and conducts several research oriented programs. The Institute also offers a stable platform for those young and bright scientists that are willing to unlock the several secrets of Antarctic.

Infrastructure and Campus:

The Infrastructure facilities offered by the Institute is pretty impressive and covers several most modern as well as highly developed Oceanographic equipments that can be used in research oriented programs.  The Institute has an enormous campus that houses several activity centers as well as laboratories. He Institute has the latest cold-storage laboratory that is build to house several ice samples collected from the continent of Antarctica and offer same climatic conditions for the long preservations of the samples. The Institute has an urban location in the city of Vasco-Da-Gama.

Courses Offered:

The Institute particularly does not offer any specific Under-Graduate or Post Graduate degree but offers different research based programs within the field of Oceanographic as a well as related to the continent of Antarctic.

Admission Procedure:

The Institute for recruiting aspiring candidates holds a written entrance test that is on annual basis. Besides these candidates are offered stable platform in which they can conduct their research.

Placements:

There are no specific placements for the candidates but most of them are recruited by the Government of India to further conduct several research based programs and utilize those studies for the benefits of the nation.
