Polymer Science and its scope
Polymer Science is the field that is related with the science and technology which helps in analyzing and modifying the polymer materials. The topic covers the manufacture of polymers, its specifications as well as applications. The field of Polymer science also carries out detailed study of the properties of polymers, its characterization, processing and description.
Course Outlook
The polymer Science course is of four years duration. The four years are divided into eight semesters where each year consists of two semesters. Each semester of the curriculum is allocated with different theoretical subjects and practicals. The subjects in the first year are common to all the engineering branches. The second year of study focuses on the specific subjects of polymer science and technology. The third year of the polymer science programme concentrates on the specialized areas of Polymer science.
Different types of Courses in Polymer Science and Technology
- B.E. Polymer Science and Chemical Technology
- B.E. Polymer Technology
- B.Tech. Polymer Science and Technology (PST)
- M.E. Polymer Technology
- M.Tech. Polymer Science and Technology
- Ph.D. Polymer Science and Technology
Institutes in India that conducts B.Tech in Polymer Science Engineering
- B.S. Abdur Rahman University, Chennai
- Cochin University: The Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, Kochi (Kerala)
- Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T), New Delhi (Delhi)
- Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology, Virudhunagar
- University of Calcutta: Department of Polymer Science and Technology, Kolkata
Eligibility:
The candidate must have passed the higher secondary examination from a recognized board in order to get admitted to bachelor’s degree course in polymer technology. The candidate should have studied physics, chemistry, and mathematics at the higher secondary level. The admission to courses is carried out based on the basis of the rank obtained in the entrance tests. Several entrance tests are being conducted by the Central government as well as state government so as to admit the qualified candidates to the different courses in polymer science and technology.
Job Prospects:
Polymers have wide application in industries like aerospace, automobile etc. It also finds application in specific products like fishing rods, bicycle, sports equipments etc. Those who hold qualification in the field of polymer science and technology can find enormous jobs in various industries as quality control inspectors, technologists, polymer specialists etc. Several opportunities exist in the field of research and development.
Even if this stream of engineering is not as popular as any other branches, there is ample scope for the talented and qualified professionals.
