Raining time for college admission in India

In this admission season, is it possible for everyone to get an admission in the same institution or university they wish to?

It is a big question which doesn’t have a proper answer.

Getting an admission in a reputed college is very difficult nowadays. At present in India there are a huge number of students who are looking for admission in some reputed colleges. Students as well as parents are in worries. There are many prestigious universities in India. We can find top institutions in almost all states and as usual there is a big queue in these institutions where you can find students struggling to get a seat.

For example, Delhi University comes among the top universities in India. Every year the number of applicants in the university increases. But only a few get an admission. Why is it so difficult to get an admission in these universities? Is everyone who deserve, are getting admission?

There is a big thing to worry that many a time those who deserve admission in such universities are not getting an opportunity to study in there. And that is because of the single admission test which is conducted by the university. It is high time that the institutions should realize that talent of all the students cannot be evaluated by a single test. A more flexible and appropriate system must be adapted to make sure that all the talented students are given equal opportunity.

On the other hand it is also very essential to understand that it is very difficult for the universities to interview all the candidates who apply. And thus the selection is done through test. Well, in other way we can say that you have to prove yourself in these tests to make sure that you get admission in a reputed college or University.

Not everyone who applies for a slot get through. For example we can take the Delhi University’s Shri Ram College of Commerce where every year more than 28,000 applications come. But, out of which only 400 candidates get admission. There are around 80 colleges under Delhi University and every where the situation is same. Since the numbers of applicants are high, the only feasible method for the University is to rely on the admission test.

Flying abroad

Many of the students are looking forward to fly to some other country for further studies. This is because students have the opinion that the system followed in India is not appropriate. According to them, it is not at all possible to judge the merit of a student on the basis of the test which is conducted by the University. There are also students who don’t even apply to any of the Indian universities. Instead they are just aiming to make their mark in some of the American as well as other foreign university. Students aiming for foreign universities also believe that top schools in India will miss talented candidates because of these tests. It is not necessary that a student with bright future and good talent should clear the test.

According to the statistics, out of 1,000 seniors last year, 400 could easily qualify for universities abroad. And most surprising part is that there were many students among the qualified who couldn’t clear the test conducted by Delhi University. Here, it is clear that, Indian students are not given the privilege to prove themselves in the local level. But at global level Indian students are competitive in many aspects. This can only be rectified if our education system understands the necessity of different form of admission test and makes some initiatives to bring in much more feasible and effective system.

Increasing number of students

The number of students in India is also drastically increasing. Today the majority of the Indian population is youth and it is expected that in the next few years there will be a total of around 120 million Indians who will reach college age.

It is high time that Indian education ministry must look into it and come with a holistic approach. It is essential that judging a student’s performance must be taken to another level where students are well evaluated. It is appreciable that many colleges, at present are trying to get away from the exam-only system. Institutions are trying to rework on the current system so that more talented students are given opportunity to study in top institutions in the nation. But, a change in one or two institutions may not make more effective results. This approach must be adopted by almost every university and institutions.

According to some experts it is not only the education system which has to be blamed for these issues. The pressure from parents also is one of the biggest reasons. Some times the parents pressurize their child to get through the test. This is because of the brand influence of institutions among parents. Whereas there are many opportunities at lesser known institutions, these opportunities go unnoticed many a times. Since, parents insist their children to aim for some particular institutions, the crowed for admission in that particular institute or university becomes intense.

There are opinions that these issues can be rectified only if more foreign universities are welcomed to the country. Yes, it is true that if the government can make more flexible rules and regulations. It could help the nation to have more universities and institutions which can control this problem to some extent. At present the rules and regulations in the country is not much impressive for foreign countries to start their institutions as well as universities in the country.

Since, the cabinet is making discussion on this and there are some bills to be passed on this, we can expect that in the near future there will be more institutions which can provide a better platform for the students to enhance their skills and talents. It can also be expected that more business organisations will start education institutions which can put an end to the current issues in the nation to an extent.
