University of Allahabad was established in the year 1887, after the establishment of the Universities of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, the University of Allahabad. The institute offers both graduate and post graduate degrees. After 17 years, they set up departments for teaching and went on to establish reputed doctoral research programme institutes. For people who aspire to achieve a seat under the Allahabad University, the University holds an annual examination every year for admission to post graduate courses in various science and Arts disciplines.

Structure of the PGAT M.A. in Ancient History Entrance Exam

The question paper comprises of short answer type and medium answer type questions. Short answer type questions have to be answered in 50 words while the latter has to be answered in 150 words each. Candidates will be given 1 hour 30 minutes time to complete the exam.

Syllabus for the PGAT M.A. in Ancient History Entrance Exam

Indian Culture: Varanasram, sanskaras, position of women, caste, marriage, ancient Indian religions, social change and impact of Islam. Bhakti Movement, guilds, Indus and Vedic, Social and change religious reforms of 19th century:

  • Brahma Samaja
  • Arya Samaja
  • Ram Krishna Mission

Art and Archaeology: Basic features of Indian Art; Orissa and Pallavas, Mauryan and Gupta Art, Indus Art, Temple Architecture of Khajuraho. Definition of archaeology and its relation with natural sciences, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Paleolithic, Iron age, Taxila, Kausambi, Indus valley civilization, Arikamedu, Hastinapur, and Nevasa.

Political History of Ancient India: Including History of South India from 600 B.C.-1206 A.D.

Concept and Current in History:  History is science or art, Objectivity in History, approaches of history, Karl Marx, Toyanbee, Philosophy of history with special reference to Hegel, Ranke, Spengler, Nationalism, Colonialism and Imperialism

Ancient Civilizations: Greece, Egypt, Rome, Mesopotamia, and China.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have managed to qualify in the B.A course with Ancient History under University of Allahabad or any University in India approved by the UGC are considered eligible to apply for this examination. Candidates who qualified for the 2 year degree course before 1987 can also apply as they are also considered eligible.

How to Apply?

Visit www.pgat2011.com to obtain online application forms for this examination. The downloadable information brochure will give the applicants, all instructions to fill the form accurately. For applying online, applicants must download a challan of State Bank of India from the site given in the University’s official site, fill it up neatly without errors, and deposit the completed challan with a registration fee of Rs 600/- (for General and OBC category candidates) and Rs 300/- (for SC/ST category candidates). After acknowledging the reception of the fee, the SBI will give each candidate a 9 digit code number which is to be entered in the online form before submitting it. The applicants will be given two copies of the challan from the Bank. If the code doesn’t match the fee receipt details, then the form will be rejected.

How to fill the Form?

Filling an application form online isn’t hard as filling it by hand. But still, great care and caution must be there while typing in the details online. Check the filled up form once more to be sure that the form is devoid of errors. One other thing to be very careful is when filling up the challan and later the application form, where the 9 digit code given from the SBI needs to be entered. Enter the code very carefully. Submit the forms before the last date of submission, as early as you can. The original copy of the challan must be kept safe by the candidates.
