The branch of science which deals with managing, catching, processing, marketing, and conservation of fish is known as fishery science. The people generally don’t care for the unfavorable circumstance that can affect the survival of the fishes. So, there is a significant need for a bachelor course in fishery science. The abbreviation for Bachelor of Fisheries Science is B.F.Sc. or B.Sc. (Fisheries). Both these degrees stand for the same. The course involves study about habits and breeding of various types of fishes. It is structured in such a way to study farming and husbandry of aquatic organisms and fishes in brackish water, fresh water and any marine environment. Hence, the course aims at utilization as well as conservation of fishes which helps in maintaining the eco balance. The duration of the course is 4 years. Each year is further divided into 2 semesters and so there is a total of 8 semesters for the course.

The qualification needed to join BSc (Fisheries) is 10+2 pass in science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects. The candidates must clear the all India Level Common Entrance Test conducted by ICAR. The age limit is 17-20 years.

Specialization for Bachelor of Fisheries Science

This is extremely a job oriented course in India as well as in foreign countries. To select the right candidates, there will be an entrance test and interview.

The educational qualification is 10+2 with 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% aggregate marks in other science subjects. Also, a minimum of 50% marks is needed in English either in 10th or +2.

After completing the bachelor course, one can go for Masters of Fisheries Science.  Those who have completed graduation in fisheries science can apply for the post of research assistants, biochemists, technicians etc.

Graduates in fisheries science can find jobs in public sector fields such as nationalized banks and fisheries departments.  Since sea food exporting is the major income of India, candidates in the field of fisheries science are in great demand.  Some of the main employment areas are Fisheries Colleges, Fish Farmers Development Agencies, Feed Sales Department, Fish Disease Diagnostic Centre, etc.
